About This Book
A supernatural mariner condemned to wander the seas appears to a passing ship and makes a pact with its master, who brings the stranger ashore in exchange for promised riches. The homeward vessel’s daughter becomes fixated on a portrait of the spectral figure and vows to end his torment by proving unwavering constancy; her former suitor urges caution but fails to dissuade her. The work unfolds in three acts of choral songs, spinning-room reveries, seafaring revelry, and tense confrontations in which love, fidelity, and the boundary between earthly and otherworldly loyalties are tested.
