Ethnographic compilation of Viena Karelian birth, childhood and death customs gathered from oral informants, chiefly one knowledgeable woman. It systematically records practices and beliefs governing menstruation, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, infant handling, naming and childhood. The second half treats illness, dying, corpse care, wakes, coffining, funerals, grave rituals, mourning behavior, memorial meals, cemetery customs and notions of the afterlife. Interspersed are traditional lament-songs, spells, proverbs, narratives and ritual recipes, with prescriptions for ritual actions, healing procedures and calendar observances.
