About This Book
A collection of ethnographic recollections assembled from fieldwork in Lapland and nearby regions, presenting oral traditions, old songs, spells, proverbs, riddles, and local histories recorded from elderly informants. The pieces describe traditional livelihoods and seasonal movements, encounters between long-time inhabitants and newcomers, beliefs about spirits and healing, rites and songs, and everyday anecdotes such as thefts and place-origin tales. Material is given largely in the speakers' voices and is accompanied by drawings, photographs, and explanatory notes.
