A curated set of facsimile plates reproduces illuminations from a richly decorated medieval chronicle and is accompanied by introductory remarks on the manuscript’s provenance and artistic character. The images depict scenes of warfare, sieges, tournaments, royal processions, ecclesiastical ceremonies and domestic courtly life, emphasizing contemporary dress, armor, banners and military apparatus. Commentary explains the choice to preserve original scale and stylistic idiosyncrasies so readers may appreciate Gothic composition, color and border ornamentation. A catalogue of plates links each miniature to the episode in the underlying chronicle that it illustrates.
