About This Book
The pamphlet presents a sustained Christian critique of warfare, arguing on moral, prudential, and theological grounds that armed conflict is incompatible with the teachings of Jesus. It first claims war is inhuman — hardening hearts, abusing creation, oppressing the poor, spreading terror, causing mutilation and death, and multiplying widows and orphans. It then contends war is unwise — provoking further insult, increasing difficulties, destroying property, threatening liberties, diminishing happiness, and failing to secure spiritual ends. Finally it treats war as criminal — promoting pride, violating conscience, opposing patient suffering, mercy, forgiveness, and love of enemies — and answers common objections before affirming that the kingdom of the Mediator is spiritual.
