About This Book
The narrative follows the director of a secluded facility that produces androids as he confronts an approaching movement of anti-robot fanatics led by a vociferous bigot who demands investigation. With higher authorities unwilling to intervene and armed cortical-stimulation weapons arrayed outside, he and his wife debate whether to resist, placate, or cooperate to avert mass violence. He consults a colleague to seek a solution while wrestling with a bitter ethical dilemma: protect human lives at the cost of suppressing synthetic beings and the institution’s guarded work, or defend the Creche and risk widespread social upheaval. The story examines secrecy, fear, and the moral compromises of survival.
