It surveys early development and larval forms across groups (cephalochordates, tunicates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals), compares germ-layer formation and patterns of gastrulation, and examines ancestral chordate features and phylogenetic implications. The second part treats organogenesis in detail, tracing origin and comparative development of epidermis, nervous system, sensory organs, notochord and vertebral skeleton, and other structures, concluding with general syntheses on homologies, modes of layer formation, larval types, and evolutionary interpretations.
