About This Book
The narrative follows White Otter, a young man of the Chis-chis-chash village who broods over loss and his place on the prairie. A nocturnal raid led by the Bat and Red Arrow captures a trader’s pony herd through speed and cunning, leaving the pursuers baffled. The trader Mr. McIntish later confronts the camp and demands restitution at a solemn council where elders consider custom and consequence. Interwoven episodes of hunts, fasts, ceremonies, and skirmishes explore courage, communal law, and the uneasy contact between the village and passing traders.
