About This Book
A broody hen longs for chicks and frets when her nest remains empty until the mistress returns eggs and the hen broods them. When the young hatch she discovers they are ducklings whose habits of splashing, swimming, and wandering confound her maternal expectations. She tries to guide and protect them, searches anxiously, and worries over their safety as they follow watery inclinations and roam beyond her control. The narrative traces her shifting anxieties and eventual acceptance, gently examining maternal devotion, the limits of authority, and the comic poignancy of mismatched expectations.
