About This Book
A boy named John grows up on the prairie, loses his mother, and receives early instruction in nightly prayer from his grieving father. Placed with relatives, he drifts into neglect and childish mischief alongside cousins, indulging in amusements such as card parties and risky play by buffalo wallows. Restless years lead him away from home — including a spell with a traveling circus — where youthful errors expose him to danger and regret. Through trials and reflection he gradually abandons harmful habits, embraces responsibility and faith, and matures into a dependable, morally aware young man.
