About This Book
The narrator, a young ship captain on the eve of a long voyage, discovers and secretly shelters an escaped seaman who bears a striking physical and psychological resemblance to him. As the man recounts circumstances that led to a fatal episode aboard another vessel, the captain endures an inward struggle between legal duty and personal sympathy, testing his authority and self-identity. Their concealment forces tense, solitary episodes aboard ship and careful maneuvers ashore, culminating in the captain's decision to facilitate the man's clandestine departure. The story examines duality, conscience, isolation, and the burdens of command.
