The narrative follows a young resident of a rural village as local entertainments, class rivalries, and private grievances intersect. Festivities and casual taunts escalate into more serious incidents: mischief and consequences, disputes that invoke an unwritten local code, and a crucial dying deposition that alters relationships. Alongside episodes of sport, courtship, and everyday labor, storms and long-term reckonings reshape characters over seven years, exposing moral choices, hidden loyalties, and the limits of social pretence. The work balances brisk plotting with atmospheric scenes of community life and gradual revelation of character.
