The narrative weaves together espionage, household life, social entertainments, and violent frontier encounters, tracing shifting loyalties among spies, loyalists, patriots, and displaced households. It examines the fracturing of alliances, the revenge and retribution that follow attacks on frontier communities, and the complex role of Native confederacies, moving from city intrigue and balls to brutal skirmishes and a climactic campaign that forces characters to confront changing social order and personal reckonings.
