About This Book
A firsthand account of a prolonged journey through the mountainous north of Luzon, recording trails, vegetation, and the rugged topography alongside encounters with highland communities such as Ifugao, Ilongot, and Bontok. The text blends travel narrative and ethnographic observation: receptions by towns, school and government contacts, descriptions of rituals and dances, headhunting practices and atonement customs, rice terraces and crafts, local legends, food and intoxicants, athletic games, and funeral rites. Recurrent themes are cultural diversity, contrasts between Christianized settlements and remote forest peoples, and the logistical difficulties of moving through dense, inaccessible mountain country.
