About This Book
A ballad recounts a towering giant's challenge to a king for his daughter and half the realm, and the lowly Orm Ungerswayne's acceptance of the combat. Orm seeks his buried father's sword, Birting, wins a boon and sets out to face the giant; after a fierce, multi-day struggle he cripples and slays the foe. He then sails and kills a rival who avenged a kin, claims the maiden, and returns triumphant. The poem combines heroic combat, supernatural lineage and quest motifs, concise stanzaic narration, and swift scene-to-scene movement that culminates in vengeance fulfilled and marriage awarded.
