About This Book
The play unfolds in a shabby Neapolitan caffè where the owner and a motley company of patrons—an ostentatious proprietor and his wife, a hesitant pianist, showgirls, two pretentious gentlemen and other drifters—move through nights of music, poor dancing and small-talk. Over three acts the scenes trace their petty rivalries, fleeting intimacies and self-delusions, exposing social pretence, economic precariousness and moral ambiguity. Stage directions render the cluttered interior and local rhythms, while interactions alternately reveal moments of tenderness, cruelty and comic vanity, sketching a crowded urban milieu where hopes and decencies are strained by circumstance.
