About This Book
The play is set in the commercial room of an old-fashioned hotel where a group of commercial travellers, a doctor, and a waiter exchange stories about a reputed specter, Jerry Bundler. Skepticism and credulity collide as conversational anecdotes, wagers, and theatrical cues escalate into a sequence of comic misunderstandings and staged apparitions. The waiter’s intimate knowledge of local lore and the use of lighting, sound, and timing drive the unfolding farce. Through witty dialogue and character types the piece satirizes bravado, superstition, and the appetite for sensational tales while blurring the line between prank and genuine fear.
