About This Book
The volume gathers two novellas. The first traces a nine-year-old boy who slips away from town into a pine forest, where idle philosophizing and vivid fantasies—of armies, sea rovers and imperial power—give way to a sleep that unfolds into uncanny dream-sequences of horseshoeing, burial and a faltering return toward home. The second follows a disaffected student whose monotonous, pleasure-seeking life yields moments of remorse and brittle resolutions amid petty humiliations. Both pieces probe inward consciousness, contrasting imaginative escape with the stubborn pull of social habit and the uneasy desire for moral or personal transformation.
