About This Book
An illustrated study examines prehistoric textile production in the eastern United States, surveying materials, techniques, and product types. It defines textile art and describes wattle work, basketry, matting, pliable fabrics, spinning and weaving, cloth, nets, feather-work, and embroidery, and documents uses such as baskets, sieves, cradles, shields, mats, and garments. The author draws on archaeological finds, ethnohistoric observations, and artifact impressions preserved in caves, charred mound remains, copper-associated residues, and pottery impressions to reconstruct manufacturing methods and patterns. Plates and figures compare weave structures, fragment types, and contextual occurrences to trace technological development and modes of preservation.
