About This Book
The story follows a young scout assigned to reconnaissance during a mock military exercise who struggles between duty and a personal longing for a woman whose summer home lies along the roads he must patrol. He resorts to chance to choose a route, covertly follows a baker's boy to use as a screen, and advances with exaggerated caution through small-town scenes that blur play-acting and genuine emotion. Satirical episodes expose the absurdities of amateur warfare and the awkward romance of a man whose patriotic pose competes with private desire.
