About This Book
The story follows Billy Barlow, superintendent of an electric power-house who remains in Hayti after his company is pushed out and is taken on by the government to run municipal electric lighting. He confronts an erratic president over withheld wages, repeatedly leveraging the town's illumination by switching the lights off and on to force payment. Episodes alternate comic farce and satirical observation of local politics, foreign business interests, and personal integrity, exploring how technology, money, and authority collide in a small republic while the protagonist balances duty, shrewdness, and a New England work ethic.
