About This Book
The narrative follows an American enlisted man attached to a Canadian unit at Vimy Ridge whose trench duties, injuries, and uneasy relations with a young officer lead him into a sequence of espionage episodes. After reconciliation with the officer, the protagonist becomes involved in undercover work that includes listening posts, mining and demolition, disguised travel behind enemy lines, cryptogram decryption, spy offices in Berlin, and moral dilemmas about loyalty and sacrifice. Chapters alternate action in the trenches with training, covert operations, interrogations, and revelations, exploring themes of comradeship, ingenuity under fire, and the personal costs of intelligence work in wartime.
