Only an Irish Boy; Or, Andy Burke's Fortunes

The narrative follows a resourceful boy, Andy Burke, and his widowed mother as they struggle in modest circumstances and face snobbery from their employers. After Andy stands up to a privileged youth and his mother loses employment, he sets out to find work and to support the household. A series of episodes — schoolyard conflicts, acts of bravery that foil criminals, a dramatic encounter with a highwayman, and disputes surrounding an ailing patriarch's will — test the family's integrity and resilience. Through honesty, courage, and perseverance the boy endures setbacks, reconciles misunderstandings, and ultimately secures improved prospects for himself and his family.
