About This Book
The story follows a brave, self-reliant youth who, after his mother falls under the control of a scheming stepfather, is left dependent and ill-treated by that man and his proud son. The stepfather colludes with an unscrupulous keeper of a private asylum to conceal the mother's fate and secure her estate, forcing the boy into hardship and exile in the city. The narrative traces his struggles to earn an honest living, the betrayals and conspiracies arrayed against him, his resourceful friendships and guardianship changes, and a final confrontation that exposes the villains and restores justice.
