About This Book
The author presents a synthetic account of multiple expeditions across the northern Sahara, combining field observations, maps, photographs, and bibliographic synthesis to analyze geology, stratigraphy, hydrography and prehistoric ethnography. He distinguishes northern sedimentary terrains from the metamorphic central regions and contrasts Quaternary remnants: incised riverbeds in the north and fossil dunes in the south. Chapters treat place-names and onomastics, a monograph of a former river, and interpretations of stratigraphic architecture, while appendices collect survey, astronomical and topographical data. Photographs and maps accompany the discussion and paleontological material is acknowledged but largely deferred to specialists.
