The narrative opens with a Parisian salon consumed by two murders: a fruit seller killed by her lover and, more unsettling, the brutal nighttime slaying of a marquis. The marquis's wife, raised under a stern, puritanical father who suppressed feminine inclinations, becomes the center of scandal when gossip links her and a sinister confessor to the crime. The story alternates courtroom- and society-focused scenes with a psychological portrait of the accused, examining social judgment, repression, and the tensions between outward virtue and hidden passions as elite circles debate guilt and moral responsibility.
