About This Book
The narrative follows John Armitage, a man using an English alias who becomes entangled in continental intrigue when an aged statesman questions his account of a supposedly dead royal. He is arrested, escapes, and traverses dark decks, mountain camps, and a remote harbor while under surveillance and sharing secret messages. A subplot involves Shirley Claiborne and her Washington family, whose connections bring romance, conflict, and peril. Encounters include nighttime attacks, hidden identities, and a lost cigarette case that helps unlock secrets, leading to a final confrontation at a port where loyalties are settled and a dignified burial concludes the mystery.
