About This Book
A narrator describes a once-loved country house fallen into decay and then relays a local anecdote about a hidden scandal that explains its ruin. A clandestine affair comes to light and the betrayed spouse enacts a harsh, secret revenge, after which the household is abandoned and the villagers preserve a discreet silence. The story examines how passion, jealousy, and social appearance can produce private violence and leave visible traces of suppressed events in the landscape.
