About This Book
Set in a provincial Russian estate, the play follows an aristocratic landowner whose chronic gloom, mounting debts, and strained marriage to a compassionate wife produce apathy and self-reproach. He drifts among acquaintances—an opportunistic manager, a boisterous friend, a worldly neighbour, and a young woman whose youthful idealism briefly kindles hope—while local officials and creditors press for repayment. Conversations, petty schemes, failed consolations, and social theater expose hypocrisy, moral paralysis, and the unbearable weight of responsibility, driving the protagonist toward an unavoidable personal crisis across four acts.
