About This Book
A German-born enlisted private spent 24 years with Company K, 5th U.S. Infantry and produced a series of watercolor paintings while serving in the Indian country of the post–Civil War West. Untutored as an artist but observant and meticulous, he documented camps, trails, skirmishes, and frontier life with vivid color and detail that supplement written and photographic records. His military record included long service under the same company commander and a single known formal engagement at Valverde; disciplinary problems and unpaid debts appear in his record. Ten watercolors, chiefly depicting western scenes, entered a national museum collection and provide a soldier's eye on army operations and Native American encounters.
