Paul Gerhardt's Spiritual Songs / Translated by John Kelly

A translated collection of devotional hymns by a seventeenth-century German poet, arranged under liturgical headings such as the Trinity, Advent, Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, repentance, prayer, consolation, praise, daily morning and evening, and death and eternal life. The translator renders the originals into English metre while aiming for fidelity, and includes a preface and brief biographical sketch. The verses combine humble penitence, trust in divine comfort, celebration of Christ's life and resurrection, and pastoral consolation for suffering and mortality, often addressing communal worship and private devotion.
