About This Book
Set in a North Estonian village in early January 1919, the drama follows a household and its neighbors as they face the aftermath of military retreat, occupation and uncertain loyalties. Family members debate sacrifice, honor and the possibility of freedom while a young woman reports the arrival of Finnish volunteer fighters that briefly revive hope. Villagers relay conflicting news that enemy forces have mostly withdrawn even as a Russian lieutenant and a small detachment remain a looming threat. Through domestic scenes and heated argument, the play explores national awakening, fear, courage and the moral tensions of resisting subjugation.
