About This Book
An opera in three acts follows two poor siblings who, sent into the forest to gather provisions amid household hunger, become lost at dusk. They encounter sleep-bringing and dawn-bringing spirits that surround them with wonder before a confectionery cottage appears. A witch who lures children imprisons the boy to fatten him and plots to roast the girl, but the girl outwits the witch, forces her into the oven, and frees the boy and other enchanted children. The work closes with the rescued children restored to their parents and the household reconciled after a mixture of peril, magic, and deliverance.
