Gleaner Tales

A collection of short narratives and sketches set in the south‑western corner of Quebec, portraying the lives and challenges of early settlers from the British Isles. It combines historically grounded longer accounts — including an account of the Hampton invasion and a depiction of the epidemic year known as the ship fever — with shorter anecdotal tales drawn from local incidents. Stories depict frontier routines, military movements and confrontations, personal hardship, and communal responses to disaster, using vivid scenes and local detail to evoke the era's atmosphere and frontier society.
