Een Heldin

The narrative follows a courageous teenage eldest daughter, Hedwig, who leaves home to support her mother and younger sister after the family falls into poverty. She takes paid stitchwork, endures cold and hunger, and navigates employment and education away from home, including experiences at an English boarding school and varied placements in towns and an Irish household. Encounters with children, a dog, and local characters test her resolve; setbacks force improvisation and humility, while steady industry and compassion gradually open new opportunities and a more secure life for her family.
