About This Book
The narrative follows a middle-aged man in a leading position at his company, Färber, who builds a respectable domestic life but secretly struggles with professional failure; after dismissal he conceals unemployment from his wife and children, drifts anxiously through the city, contemplates vanishing, then has an impulsive affair with an experienced woman met on a lake steamer. Their intimacy reveals her morally ambiguous livelihood and deepens his crisis of responsibility as he weighs flight, financial ruin, and the temptation of illicit schemes proposed by an old acquaintance.
