About This Book
A small party of boys sets off in a motorboat to cruise down a winding southern river through cypress swamps toward the Gulf, encountering swamp life, wild birds, and game along the way. They meet a local lad and his community of squatters and shingle-makers, and become entangled in tense disputes with a feared family and pursuing lawmen. The voyage alternates scenes of seamanship and outdoor sport with episodes of capture, escape, and daring rescue, exploring loyalty, friendship, practical survival skills, and respect for the untamed landscape.
