A young schoolboy leaves home life and sets out for West Africa, where sea voyages, forest travel, and encounters with hostile communities test his courage and resourcefulness. He hears local tales of slavery, survives setbacks and captivity in Coomassie, and observes instances of resistance and unusual warrior traditions such as the Dahomey Amazons. The narrative follows coastal operations, the advance inland and pitched battles, including the engagement at Amoaful, leading to the eventual capture of Coomassie, and frames these events through themes of bravery, adaptation, and the practical hardships of campaigning in unfamiliar terrain.
