About This Book
Framed as a mock lecture-recital that lampoons Wagnerian pretension, the piece adapts the folktale of a murderous husband into a comic musical fantasy: a wealthy, morally dubious husband marries an innocent, romantic heroine whose curiosity leads to the discovery of a forbidden chamber; an ambitious sister, a mercenary mother, a heroic brother and a chorus of vassals, headless wives, and comic animals intervene, leading to a violent rescue and the villain's downfall. The text alternates satire of operatic criticism and musical affectation with playful theatrical spectacle, blending mythic motifs, absurdist comedy, and stageable scenes for voice and chorus.
