A small party of companions survives a violent wreck and life on a drifting icy isle, then undertakes a series of interplanetary voyages that carry them across turbulent atmospheres and through the zones of giant planets and comets. Their technical ingenuity and practical skills repeatedly rescue them from catastrophes: they penetrate hostile atmospheres, face boarding actions and encounters in space, become castaways on a comet, and travel from Mars toward Neptune and Saturn before an unexpected passage propels them toward the Infinite. The narrative alternates perilous action with moments of scientific observation and human resourcefulness.
