About This Book
An aristocratic household is shaken when its heir makes a secret, socially damaging marriage to a woman of humble origin, provoking family outrage, neighborhood gossip, and sustained domestic strife. Rival relations and a resentful cousin intensify misunderstandings while the husband struggles between duty and affection. The action moves through domestic scenes, society parties, and regional newspaper reports, then into revelations of a long-concealed personal secret that forces reckonings. The narrative is divided into three parts that trace immediate consequences, a circle of friends and suitors, and the eventual disclosure and aftermath, following how characters respond, whether they reconcile, and how lives reshape over the succeeding years.
