A journey through the Yemen and some general remarks upon that country

The author combines a measured historical and geographic survey of Yemen, its landscape, tribal frontiers, Islamic influences, and recent rebellion, with an illustrated travelogue recounting an overland route from Aden through Lahej, Khoreiba, Yerim, Dhamar, Sanaa, Menakha and Hodaidah. Observations include topography, agriculture, towns, monuments, social customs, administrative presence, and encounters with local authorities, supported by sketches, photographs, maps and appendices containing genealogical lists of local rulers. The book interleaves contextual analysis and episodic journey chapters to provide both background and on-the-ground reportage.
