About This Book
This work presents a guided study of the abbey's architecture, interiors, and funerary monuments, illustrated with colour plates and descriptive vignettes. It combines architectural description of transepts, chapels, nave, and the choir with historical narrative from the Saxon foundation through medieval rebuilding, post-Reformation changes, and later restorations, noting the evolving royal relationship and the suppression of the monastery. Attention is given to shrines, tombs, brasses, and ceremonial objects connected with coronations and national memorials, and the text alternates close visual detail with contemplative reflections on the site's changing ceremonial and civic role.
