Wanted, a Young Woman to Do Housework: Business principles applied to housework

The work diagnoses problems in domestic labor—ignorance, inefficiency, and difficulty recruiting houseworkers—and argues that household management should be treated like a business and a profession. It recommends employer education in domestic science, careful hiring and supervision, and adoption of labor standards: employees living outside the workplace, eight-hour days, six-day weeks, legal holidays, and overtime pay. Practical eight-hour schedules are presented for one to three employees, and the text links modern conveniences and outsourcing to rising costs and declining skill. The overall aim is to reorganize household labor on modern business principles to improve efficiency and fairness.
