About This Book
A scholarly-minded king and his three companions swear to renounce women and worldly pleasures to pursue study, but a visiting princess and her attendants prompt all of them to quickly fall in love, producing witty banter, comic misunderstandings, disguises, and a foolishly pompous suitor and schoolmaster subplot. The action blends playful wordplay and courtly games with reflections on vows, desire, and the limits of intellectual austerity. The tone shifts at the end when troubling news forces the postponement of expected weddings, leaving promises unsettled and characters to reassess their loyalties and commitments.
