About This Book
A four-act drama set in a provincial town contrasts the orderly domestic life of a children's home with the tense atmosphere of a nearby household, following intersecting relationships among caretakers, foster children and local youth. Central scenes explore a volatile romance between a passionate young man and a spirited foster girl, rivalries and social ambitions among young women, and the anxieties of elders striving to maintain propriety. Alternating intimate interiors and public festivities, the play examines desire, class aspirations, authority, and the gap between outward respectability and inward restlessness, as characters negotiate impulse, responsibility and social expectation.
