The volume assembles dramatic pieces, lyrical poems, romances, ballads, fables and local sketches grouped into themed sections. It opens with a comic-apocalyptic drama in which a newly dead soul confronts celestial gatekeepers and is set to reenact sacred scenes as a trial, while other poems range from intimate meditations on love, nature and faith to narrative songs and playful mythic or moral fables. Numerous short pieces portray city landmarks and landscapes with a theatrical, often ironic voice. Recurring concerns include ritual and belief, artistic life and manners, and the interplay between public places and private feeling.
