The story follows Tom, Dick, Harriet, and their schoolmates as local rivalry and a desire to improve their community spark a succession of schemes, practical jokes, and earnest projects. Episodes move between on-ice rescues and inventive repairs, lively Improvement Society meetings, competitive ice-boat and track events, and the theft and recovery of a school treasury, alongside a mystery surrounding a daring young visitor.
