The Whelps of the Wolf

The narrative follows Jean Marcel, a voyageur who returns from a remote Ungava wilderness and struggles to rejoin life at a coastal fur-post. Traveling by canoe with a puppy he names Fleur, he confronts spring thaws, storms, and the challenges of long-distance travel while renewing ties with a mission community and a young woman, Julie Breton. The story moves between scenes of survival and hunting in muskeg and ice, conflicts with half-breeds and frontier justice, the moral codes of Cree society, and episodes of loyalty, loss, and consequence as men, dogs, and communities face the harsh northern elements.
