The Walking Delegate

The narrative follows a charismatic walking delegate who rises from an unstable childhood and varied labor to lead a precarious union in a booming construction trade, building leverage through organization and militant tactics. It depicts a foreman torn between loyalty to coworkers and anger at the delegate, employers' calculated efforts to undermine union power, clandestine schemes, strike campaigns, betrayals by replacement workers, and violent confrontations. Personal relationships and political maneuvering complicate choices on both sides, and the conflict proceeds through exposure, tactical defeats and limited victories that reshape careers, alliances, and the balance between labor and business.
